Global Outlook: Rebooting Democracy for a New World Order

10.08.2026 kl. 12:00 - 13:00

Store Torungen (Sam Eydes plass 2)

Democracy is in decline. For the first time in modern history, the number of autocratic regimes has surpassed the number of democracies. In the past year alone, 45 countries have moved toward authoritarianism, while only 19 have taken steps toward democracy. Today, 71% of the world’s population lives under authoritarian rule.

This dramatic shift signals the emergence of a new world order – one that challenges the global institutions built after World War II to promote peace, cooperation, and democratic values.

Global Outlook 2026 explores how we can revitalize democracy and reimagine global governance for a more just and sustainable future.

Program:
1. Saving Democracy in a Time of Monsters. Keynote Speaker: Espen Barth Eide, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Norway
2. Democracy in an Age of Authoritarianism. Threats and sources of renewal. Keynote: Annika Silva-Leander, Head of Strategic Initiatives at International IDEA and UN Permanent Observer.
3. Surviving the Geopolitics of AI. How to promote democracy, sovereignty and growth in a time of power concentration. Keynote: Hassan Damluji, Founder and Executive Director of the think tank Global Nation

Global Outlook will be moderated by Anita Pratap, international journalist, author and documentary filmmaker.
